After
the success of becoming the worlds first to dive solo and unassisted
at the Geographic North Pole in April 2003, Marcus Fillinger has
initiated this awe inspiring expedition series – a testament
to mans passion and respect for the last true unforgiving wilderness
on earth.
To complete a polar expedition in a lifetime is within itself
a feat of incredible endurance, but to complete three polar expeditions
including a dive at each water based pole in a year, is indeed
a testament to the passion, tenacity, and motivation that draw
only the true and the brave to the polar regions - 15 Below is
the chronicle of this endeavor.
In order to fulfill their pioneering and passionate ambitions,
two Australian photographers - Marcus Fillinger and expedition
partner - Jason Roberts, will have to confront and overcome extreme,
indeed atrocious physical conditions, risk natural hazards that
include, exposure to the elements, predatory polar bears, and
rely on equipment whose failure could be fatal.
The experienced expeditioners will traverse the worlds three water-based
poles by means of skiing with heavy equipment laden sleds, as
well as driving a ten dog sledge team for the North Pole phase
of the expedition series.
All this, whilst capturing unique imagery of an extraordinary
pursuit in the face of enormous odds that will occur in the harsh
environments of the globe – with the premise to capture
imagery never seen before, in addition to completing three world
first polar expeditions, including a dive under each pole.
The worlds water based poles are
Geographic North Pole 90ºN (with 10 dog sledge team + dive)
Magnetic North Pole 81ºN – 110ºW (ski and pulk + dive)
Magnetic South Pole 64ºS – 138ºE (ski and pulk + dive)
Once at their final destinations, the two extreme adventurers
will complete a dive under the polar ice, becoming the first to
dive the world’s water based poles. The film will be a visual
record of this arduous three-part expedition; their passion, their
difficult and dangerous attempt to realise a unique and obsessive
vision.
